Feed posts
Instagram crops a photo taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1. Show it all keeps the whole picture and fills the rest of the frame with a blurred copy of it, or with white, black or any colour.

HOW TO USE IT
Four steps from any photo to one Instagram keeps whole, at exactly the pixels it uses.
Or up to 20 at once for a carousel. They all get the same size, so nothing is cut off after the first slide.
Portrait 3:4 takes up the most room in the feed. Pick 9:16 for a story or a reel.
Drag the photo in the frame and zoom, or switch to Show it all to keep every pixel.
A JPG at exactly the size Instagram uses. On a phone, Save or share puts it in your photos or straight into an app.
HandlePilot designs your carousels and edits your reels from your own footage, already at Instagram’s sizes, and writes every word in your tone of voice.
THE SIZES
Instagram keeps a photo at full quality up to 1,080 pixels wide, from 1.91:1 (wide) to 3:4 (tall). Anything outside that gets cropped.
| Post | Ratio | Pixels | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | The tallest photo Instagram keeps whole. The profile grid shows posts in this shape. |
| Portrait | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | The classic portrait post. Loses a thin strip at each side in the grid. |
| Square | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Shows whole in the feed; the grid trims the sides. |
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | The widest photo Instagram keeps whole. A 16:9 or 4:3 photo also posts uncropped. |
| Story or reel | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Full screen. Reels accept anything from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at 30 fps or more. |
| Carousel | one of the above | same as the first slide | Up to 20 photos and videos. One shape applies to all of them. |
NO CROPPING
A phone screenshot or a panorama is the usual victim. Show it all keeps every pixel.
Instagram crops a photo taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1. Show it all keeps the whole picture and fills the rest of the frame with a blurred copy of it, or with white, black or any colour.
Instagram gives every photo the first photo’s shape. Drop all your photos together and the resizer gives them the same size, so nothing gets cut off after the first slide.
The grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles, so a 4:5 or square post loses a strip at each side. Tick Show what the profile grid shows to see what stays.
VIDEO
Drop one video and pick Story or reel 9:16, or any feed size.
Fill the frame turns a landscape video into a full-screen one by cropping the sides; drag to keep the part that matters. Show it all keeps the whole video on a blurred background.
Same 1080 × 1920 frame as a reel. Tick Show roughly where Instagram’s buttons sit to keep your text clear of the profile line and the reply bar.
You get an MP4 (H.264) at 1080 pixels wide with the original sound, made by your browser’s own encoder. A long video takes a while and the tab has to stay open. Current Chrome, Edge and Safari can do it.
Neither is required. A feed photo can be any shape from 1.91:1 (wide) to 3:4 (tall), so a 4:3 or 16:9 landscape photo posts without cropping. Stories and full-screen reels are 9:16.
Both work for feed posts. 3:4 (1080 × 1440) is the tallest photo Instagram keeps whole, and the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles. 4:5 (1080 × 1350) still posts as is, but loses a thin strip at each side in the grid. Tick Show what the profile grid shows to see it.
Pick a size, then choose Show it all. The resizer places the whole photo on a blurred copy of itself, or on white, black or a colour you pick.
Post photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4, at least 1,080 pixels wide. In a carousel every photo takes the first photo’s shape, so resize them all to one size: drop them here together.
Drop the video and pick Story or reel 9:16. Fill the frame crops the sides, and you drag to choose what stays. Show it all keeps the whole video on a blurred background.
Photos are saved 1,080 pixels wide, the most Instagram keeps, as a high-quality JPG, or a PNG if you prefer. A photo smaller than the size you pick can’t gain detail, so the resizer tells you when it has to enlarge one.
No. The resizer runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device.
Up to 20 minutes. Instagram doesn’t recommend reels over 3 minutes to people who don’t follow you.
When you want the empty space filled with made-up scenery rather than a background, an AI image expander does that. When a reel needs cuts, captions and music, use a video editor. HandlePilot’s Reel Maker is one.
